‘In ons onderzoek kijken we heel specifiek naar de invloed van de jatropha plant op de waterhuishouding. Hoeveel water heeft de plant nodig? Welke gevolgen heeft het voor het watersysteem als de plant op grote schaal wordt verbouwd? Is er dan nog wel voldoende water beschikbaar voor andere doeleinden?
Jatropha is een veelbelovende plant. Hij kan goed tegen droogte en is inmiddels een hype in Afrika. De boeren willen er graag mee werken, zelfs op regeringsniveau wordt er gepraat over de mogelijkheden van de plant. In Tanzania wordt hij steeds meer gebruikt als omheining van veldjes, maar ook als productiegewas om er geld mee te verdienen via de verkoop van de zaden. Die zaden zijn zo groot als gebrande koffiebonen en hebben een witte vulling van makkelijk persbare olie. Een prima biobrandstof. Je kunt het zo in een dieselmotor gebruiken.’

‘Our research looked specifically at the influence of the jatropha plant on water management. How much water does the plant actually need? What are the consequences for water supplies when the plant is grown on a large scale? Is there enough water left over for other purposes?
‘Jatropha is a very promising plant. It is drought-resistant and has become quite a hype in Africa. Farmers are keen to work with it, and people are talking about its prospects even at governmental level. In Tanzania it is used more and more as a field-edge plant but also as a cash crop. The seeds, which are the size of roasted coffee beans, have a white pith containing easily-pressed oil which is an excellent fuel. You can put it straight into a diesel engine.’

Source text - Dutch KLEUR IN HET DAGELIJKS LEVEN
We kunnen al die kleurige dingen om ons heen in twee hoofdgroepen verdelen:
a. dingen die "hun eigen kleur" hebben; b.v. alles wat de natuur voortbrengt, planten, dieren, gesteentes, hout etc.
b. dingen die door ons mensen van kleur voorzien zijn.
Bij alle dingen die door mensen gemaakt worden komt het laatste veel meer voor dan het eerste: de eigen kleur van de meeste materialen wordt vervangen door een bewust gekozen kleur die anders is. We doen dit om verschillende redenen, die je weer kunt onderscheiden in hoofdgroepen:
1. om redenen van mooi of lelijk. Verreweg de meeste kleuren van de dingen om ons heen hebben hun kleur gekregen op grond van overwegingen van mooi of aangenaam en de meeste dingen worden ook, wat de kleur betreft, op grond van zulke overwegingen door ons gekozen. Natuurlijk is zoiets zeer betrekkelijk, denk maar eens aan de snel wisselende modekleuren in kleding, auto's of gebruiksvoorwerpen; bijna niemand ontkomt aan de macht van modekleuren. Daarnaast bestaat er nog zoiets als persoonlijke smaak, die ook kan veranderen zoals je weet.
2. om functionele redenen. Het komt ook voor dat dingen een bepaalde kleur krijgen, die verband houdt met het doel waarvoor ze dienen. Het kan b.v. zijn dat iets moet opvallen of juist niet, dat iets herkenbaar moet zijn, waarbij wel of niet bepaalde afspraken zijn gemaakt.
Opvallen of niet :
Wanneer iets moet opvallen moet het zich in elk geval in kleur onderscheiden van z'n omgeving, liefst zo veel mogelijk; wanneer iets juist niet moet opvallen, moet de kleur zoveel mogelijk overeenkomen met de omgeving. Voorbeelden van beide gevallen vind je in de natuur,zowel in de planten als in de dierenwereld: b.v. sommige dieren hebben opvallende kleuren, die verband houden met hun overlevingskansen (voorplanting, verdediging etc.), maar andere vallen door hun kleur juist weg tegen de kleuren van de plaatsen waar ze zich gewoonlijk ophouden (mimicry) ook alweer om te kunnen overleven. Mensen doen eigenlijk precies hetzelfde: niet alleen worden b.v. in het verkeer afstekende kleuren gebruikt voor dingen en situaties die gevaarlijk kunnen zijn, ook in b.v. de reclame en de mode maakt men gebruik van "opvallende kleuren". Daarnaast krijgt wat niet op mag vallen de kleur van z'n omgeving: denk maar aan camouflagepakken van het leger of aan de eeuwig groene banken in de plantsoenen.

We can divide the colour we see around us into two principal categories: objects which have been given a colour by Nature (plants, trees, animals, stone, wood etc) and things that have been given a colour by people. Looking at man-made objects, this second category is much the larger; more often than not we purposely alter the natural colour of the raw materials used. We do this for different reasons, which can again be categorized into two main ones: aesthetic and functional.
1. Aesthetics: making things beautiful and pleasant. Most man-made objects are given a colour on this basis, and when choosing between different-coloured objects most of us select on these grounds too. Naturally, this is a very subjective matter. Think of the speed with which colour fashions change in clothing, cars and household goods, and how hard it is to avoid these trends. We do have individual tastes in colour, but these can also change, as you will know.
2. Functionality: making things practical and effective. Some objects are given a certain colour because of the purpose they serve; they might need to be conspicuous or inconspicuous, or be recognizable in some way, according to some agreed code.
Conspicuousness
A conspicuous object has to be a different colour from its environment, and the more different the colour looks, the better. An inconspicuous object has to be as similar in colouring as possible to its environment. Examples of both can be found in nature, in plants and animals, as different survival strategies. Poisonous insects signal their toxicity to potential predators with bright, garish colours, while other species mimic the colours of their surroundings so perfectly as to become next to invisible against them.
We do much the same thing. In traffic, bright colours are routinely employed to signal the presence of potentially dangerous objects and situations, and advertising and fashion often use contrasting colours to attract attention. Similarly, objects that are intended to be unobtrusive employ the colours of their immediate surroundings: think of Army camouflage materials and the classic green paint given to park benches.

Het is maar de vraag of Dogme95 ooit had kunnen uitgroeien tot een spraakmakende internationale beweging en of de vier eerste Dogmefilms ook buiten Denemarken de aandacht van pers, kritiek en publiek hadden weten te trekken zonder het document dat in 1995, drie jaar voordat de eerste Dogmefilm Festen op het Filmfestival van Cannes 1998 zijn wereldpremière beleefde, werd gelanceerd: het roemruchte 'Dogme95 Manifesto'. Het omgekeerde is echter ook het geval: zonder Thomas Vinterberg's Festen en Lars von Trier's Idioterne die beiden op deze editie van Cannes werd gepresenteerd, is het moeilijk zich een voorstelling te maken van wat voor films de opstellers van dit Manifest en de daaraan toegevoegde tien geboden van de 'Kuisheidsgelofte' (Vow of Chastity) voor ogen stond. Het Manifest drong dan ook pas werkelijk tot pers, kritiek en publiek door toen op het Filmfestival in Cannes in 1998 Festen en Idioterne als Dogme#1 en Dogme#2 werden gepresenteerd.

Al deze teksten waren voor het eerst gepubliceerd in Parijs, waar het congres waarop Von Trier het Dogme95 Manifest lanceerde bijeen was om te vieren dat in diezelfde stad een eeuw eerder de eerste openbare filmvoorstelling had plaatsgevonden. Het Parijse Odéontheater waar het Manifest werd gelanceerd was bovendien ook de plaats waar in 1968 de Parijse studentenrevolte begon. Het manifest richtte zich bovendien ook op doelwitten die uit manifesten van voorafgaande kritische filmbewegingen bekend waren (zie Rockwell 2003: 34): termen als 'illusions', 'trickery', 'predictability', 'superficial action' en de 'superficial movie' zijn een variatie op de vertrouwde mantra van de kritiek die de populaire cinema in het algemeen en Hollywood in het bijzonder steeds heeft begeleid. Zelfs in de heftige kritiek op de regisseurs van de 'golven' uit de jaren zestig konden kenners van het genre 'manifest' het gebruikelijke gebaar herkennen waarmee nieuwe zelfbenoemde avantgardes zich afzetten tegen hun directe voorgangers die steevast mislukking, revisionisme of regelrecht verraad verweten worden.
Al met al leek Von Trier het congres 'Cinema in its second century' als het podium te hebben gekozen voor een letterlijke enscenering van het gezegde van Marx dat de geschiedenis zich altijd als klucht herhaalt. De latere ontboezeming van Von Trier en Vinterberg (1995b) dat het manifest binnen vijfentwintig minuten en 'under continuous bursts of merry laughter' was opgesteld leek de indruk te bevestigen dat Manifest en Kuisheidsgelofte niet meer dan een ironisch gebaar vormden, een postmoderne pastiche op de traditie van het modernistische manifest waarvan Parijs, door Walter Benjamin (1977b) 'hoofdstad van de negentiende eeuw' genoemd en in de twintigste eeuw beschouwd als de 'hoofdstad van de film', de bakermat was geweest. Wie zou in het al post-postmoderne jaar 1995 een document met alleen al zo'n titel nog serieus kunnen nemen? Translation - English The Manifesto as a postmodern parody
It is an open question whether Dogma 95 would have become a controversial international movement, and whether the first four Dogma films would have attracted the attention of public, press and critics outside of Denmark, were it not for the document published in 1995, three years before the first Dogma film Festen had its world premiere at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival: the infamous Dogma 95 Manifesto. Still, the converse is also true: in the absence of Thomas Vinterberg's Festen and Lars von Trier's Idioterne, both of which were presented that year at Cannes, it would have been difficult to imagine what sort of films the authors of the Manifesto and of the ten commandments laid down in the accompanying Vow of Chastity actually had in mind. The Manifesto only really sunk into the minds of the public, the press and the critics when Festen en Idioterne were presented at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival as ‘Dogma #1 and ‘Dogma #2’.
Von Trier had already contributed to the mystification surrounding the Manifesto. In 1995 he had read it out to the Paris conference ‘Cinema in its second century’, refusing to provide any elaboration on the grounds that ‘the Movement’ had forbidden it, and then immediately left the congress. Given Von Trier’s reputation as the enfant terrible of Danish film, the theatricality with which the Manifesto was launched, the bombast and rhetoric that called to mind the numerous political and artistic manifestos of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the contradictions, impracticalities and absurdities of the rules themselves, the Manifesto was initially simply shrugged off as the Danish cineaste’s latest provocation. Moreover, his own film Breaking the Waves, which had won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 1996, showed scant obedience to the rules of Von Trier’s co-authored Vow of Chastity.
The Manifesto also had all the characteristics of a postmodern pastiche. Its opening stated aim ‘of countering “certain tendencies” in the cinema today’ is an explicit reference to the famous article by François Truffaut, ‘Une certaine tendance du cinéma français’, which appeared in Cahiers du Cinéma in January 1954 and which is widely regarded as the founding tract of the Nouvelle Vague. Phrases like ‘In 1960 enough was enough! The movie was dead and called for resurrection’ echo passages in Marinetti’s Futurist Manifesto of 1909 (‘Museums: cemeteries!’ and ‘You have objections? - Enough! Enough!’). The sentence ‘Today a technological storm is raging….’ paraphrases the first line of the 1848 Communist Manifesto of Marx and Engels (‘A spectre is haunting Europe…’).
Moreover, all these texts were first published in Paris, where the conference at which Von Trier launched the Dogma 95 Manifesto had gathered to celebrate the fact that 100 years earlier the city had hosted the world’s first ever public film viewing. The Odeon Theatre, where the Manifesto was launched, was the very place that the Paris student revolts had ignited in 1968. The Manifesto also took aim at well-known features of the programmes of previous critical film movements (see Rockwell 2003: 34): terms such as ‘illusions’, ‘trickery’, ‘predictability’, ‘superficial action’ and the ‘superficial movie’ are variations on a familiar theme, the critical mantra that has dogged popular film in general and Hollywood films in particular. Connoisseurs of the ‘manifesto’ genre will recognize even the heavy criticism of the directors of the film ‘waves’ of the 1960s as the customary gesture with which every new self-appointed avant-garde turns its back on its immediate predecessors and accuses them of failure, revisionism or outright betrayal.
All in all, it looked as if Von Trier had chosen the ‘Cinema in its second century’ conference to literally stage Marx’s declaration that history invariably repeated itself as farce. Von Trier and Vinterberg’s subsequent confession that the Manifesto had been drawn up in 25 minutes and ‘under continuous bursts of merry laughter’ did much to confirm the impression that the Manifesto and the Vow of Chastity formed no more than an ironic gesture, a postmodern pastiche of the tradition of the modernistic manifesto – of which Paris, which Walter Benjamin (1977b) had called ‘the capital of the 19th century’ and which was widely regarded in the 20th century as the capital of film, was the birthplace. In the already postmodern atmosphere of 1995, how could anyone be expected to take a document with such a title seriously? Its gesture and tone made an ambiguous document of the Manifesto and the Vow of Chastity: was this sort of pastiche, caricature and parody criticism disguised as performance, or performance disguised as criticism?
