5.3. GRINDING OF TOOL TIPS 21
The most important part in obtaining good debarking quality is the good condition and correct shape of debarking tools, a suitable set of tools for each tree species and correct tool pressure. The debarking quality is good, if the bark and underlying fibre layer have been removed completely and the log surface is as undamaged as possible.
The sets of VK450/620/820 tools consist of tool bodies and tool tips suitable for debarking conditions and tree species.
When the log passes through the rotor the abraders go round along the log surface and the bark is cut off in strips. By penetrating between the log and bark the debarking tools remove the bark without damaging the log surface.
The cutting edge of the tool has to be so sharp that the bark is cut off along the log surface.
The debarking tool has to be reconditioned according to the instructions so that it will be able to cut the bark and to penetrate through the bark without breaking the log.
The VK-debarking is based on the interaction of debarking tools and tool pressure.
1.1 CHOICE OF VK-TOOL SET
1. Tool for unfrozen log Allround tip
2. Tool for frozen log Winter tip
3. Tool for logs with tough bark Spruce tool tip with raised cutter
2. CONSTRUCTION OF DEBARKING TOOLS
VK480 / 620 / 820 DEBARKERS
The rotor is equipped six (6) debarking tools. The tool consists of two parts:
1. Tool body
= debarking tool
2. Tool tip
The debarking tool is pressed against the log surface through a pre-tensioned spring and axle with bearings for successful debarking with tool tips.
The tool body is fastened to tool axle by two screws. The tool body is removed from rotor only if necessary for rotor service or due to body wearing/damage. The debarking itself is done by tool tip.
The tool tip is fastened to the end of the tool body by two screws and is easy to change if the debarking conditions change or the tool tip must be reconditioned.

3. SERVICE OF FORGED TOOL BODY
3.1. GENERAL
The condition of tool body must be checked carefully at regular intervals. The tool body should be checked every time when the tool tips are changed or at least twice a week.
The fastening surfaces and leading edge of the tool body are machined.
3.1.1. Technical data of tool body
Steel material of tool body: MoC210
Carbon content C = about 0,25 %
Tempered 300-340 HB
Electrode for general repair of the body:

3.5. Bending of tool body
General wear of tool body; wear of fastening surfaces and screw holes 3.6. General wear of abrader
Wear and sharpness of leading edge 3.7.1. Repairing of leading edge
3.3. WEAR OF TOOL HEEL
Wear of tool heel/stop is measured with the tool gauge or by measuring diameter/roundness of opening between tool ends. Tool body/stop has to be replaced or the heel to be repaired if the mentioned diameter is smaller than the smallest allowed one. In general the heel wears more than the stop because the stop is of tempered steel. It is not recommendable to recondition the stop; it should be replaced by a new one.
The smallest allowed diameter of opening between the tool ends is 75 % of the design diameter. The ellipticity of this opening must not exceed 20 % of the design diameter; in case of exceeding the debarking quality will deteriorate (dimensions of the opening, see picture no. 3.1).
It is recommended that the tool body is repaired by a VK representative.
Repair of tool body:
• Clean heel of tool with grinder
• Carefully add to the room-temperature ( 20°C) tool heel necessary quantity of welding material through arc welding (material, see 3.1.1. Technical data of tool body), picture no. 3.2 (welding, see instructions, 3.7.3. Reconditioning of leading edge of tool body by hardfacing).
TOOL TYPE A MIN. A OPT.
VK480 45 mm 60 mm
VK620 53 mm 70 mm
VK820 60 mm 80 mm
• Let the body cool off slowly in an insulated place (e.g. in rock wool) in room temperature ( 20ºC or more).
• Grind the heel to its original rounded shape. The correct shape and height is checked with the tool gauge (item A), picture no. 3.3
The heel and especially the end of heel (point B) must touch the stop evenly. If the heel touches the stop only near tool axle (point C), the tool holder may get damaged, picture no. 3.3
3.4. CRACKS OF TOOL BODY
Incipient cracks of tool body can be repaired if it is not deeper than 10 mm because the body is weldable. If there is a hair crack in the body the whole body must be checked by penetration liquid. Note that the strength of a welded body will be inferior to that of a new body.
Repairing of crack:
• The crack is to be ground out completely by an angle grinder in an open "V" shape for easier welding. Pictures 3.4. and 3.5.
• Pre-heat the body, preferably in oven for about 3 hours, to 150°C to reach uniform temperature in the tool body.
• Tack the opening carefully with electric welding using suitable welding rod (see 3.1.1. Technical data of tool body), picture no. 3.5, (Welding, see item 3.7.3. Welding instructions).
• Let the body cool off slowly in an insulated place (e.g. in rock wool) at room temperature ( 20ºC or more).
• Grind the repaired area even and smooth-surfaced to the original shape of body.
3.5. BENDING OF TOOL BODY
A bent tool body can be bent back to the original shape. It can be done without heating in a hydraulic press. Picture no. 3.6.
Leading angles of bodies:
BODY TYPE LEADING ANGLE

VK480 16,5°
VK620 13°
VK820 11°
3.6. GENERAL WEAR OF ABRADER
3.6.1. Installation and removal of tool body
See Instructions for Operation and Maintenance, item 2.3.
Check that the mounting surfaces are even. Eventual unevenness will be corrected by grinding. The wear of screw holes has to be checked. This kind of damage usually occurs when the mounting screws are not tightened enough and when bolts have come loose. The undamaged screw holes and mounting surfaces as well as with a torque wrench tightened screws guarantee that all the parts stay in place.
3.7. RECONDITIONING OF LEADING EDGE OF TOOL BODY
The leading edge is the initial contact point of the log on the abrader and is therefore subject to wear.
A worn and rounded off leading edge makes it difficult for the abrader to climb onto the log. It will cause unnecessary strain on abrader, abrader holder and on the feed works, and must be avoided. If the radius of the edge exceeds
r = 1,5 mm the leading edge must be repaired as soon as possible.
Picture 3.8.

3.7.1. Repairing of leading edge
• Remove old hard facing (sprayed or welded) completely with a grinder (clean surface).
• Check shape and height of edge with tool gauge, picture 3.10.
• Small deviations can be smoothened out by grinding, see picture 3.11. Severe wear must be corrected with weld build-up. Grind welded area to the correct shape, see pictures 3.5, 3.10 and 3.11 (Electrode material, see item 3.1.1. Technical data of tool body).

3.7.2. General welding instructions
Suitable rod sizes are 2,0...3,2 mm as needed and the corresponding welding currents 30-50 A (2,0); 40-50 A (2,5) and 60-80 A (3,2).
Arc of medium length, electrode slightly inclined. The slag comes off in the cooling process.
Pre-heat the tool body preferably in oven to even temperature of about 150°C.
The welding is to be carried out with minimum heat build-up of the part to be welded. Apply only a small amount of weld at a time and if several tool bodies are worked on, alternate between tools to avoid excessive heat build-up.
3.7.3. Reconditioning of leading edge of tool body by hardfacing
The tools should be reconditioned before the leading edge is so worn that more than one weld bead is needed to restore the height of the edge to the original height. This way the reconditioning can be made direct with hardfacing electrode without any subjacent underlying tough buffer layer. If the wearing is so bad that one weld bead is not enough, a subjacent layer must be welded first and onto that the actual hardfacing.

3.7.4. Reconditioning measures
1. Assess the degree of wear
Inspect the leading edge down to the tool tip
area for approx. 70 - 90 mm upwards from the tool tip.
2. Repair weld
2.1. Initial measures
Grind the leading edge clean and put
a radius of 1 to 2 mm so that you can
apply the weld.
Sandblasting is a good cleaning
method.
2.2. Pre-heating
The whole tool is carefully pre-heated, preferably
in oven, to a temperature of appr. 150°C.
NOTE!
In cases where pre-heating is done with a flame
and not in an oven, the heating must be started
from the heavy heel area of the tool body and
then continued slowly to the thinner tip area, so the
entire leading edge is heated as evenly as possible.
The result can, however, be inferior!
3. Welding
Concerning the repair, the leading edge is formed of two different parts.
• Hardfaced part on the most wearable area of the tool, about 90 mm from the heel of the tool tip, A…B
• The part repaired with CrNi surface preparation electrode, A (if needed) - B…C
The repairing measures depend on the wear degree of the leading edge.
3.1. Minor wear of leading edge
If the end area of the leading edge (A…B) is only slightly worn so that only (1) one weld bead is needed for the repair, the hardfacing weld can be made direct onto the base material without any CrNi buffer layer. Onto the end part with the most wear 30…50 mm from point A can be welded 2…3 beads without buffer as the bending of the tool does not cause any increase to the crack.
The part B…C of the leading edge is treated only with a CrNi electrode.
3.2. Major wear of leading edge
When the wear of the leading edge is so bad that one weld bead is not enough for the hardfacing area A…B, a CrNi surface preparation layer must be welded, and onto this there has to be ground a big enough bevel (about 4 x 4 mm) for the hardfacing (picture below).
4. Slow cooling down
• After the welding the cooling is made in an insulated place making the heat transmission slower, e.g. covered with rock wool. Proper thickness of rock wool layer is 50 mm.
5. Grinding of hardfacing
• After the welding and cooling down the leading edge is ground to its original shape and the surface is ground as smooth as possible because this will increase the mechanical strength (fatigue strength) and the wear resistance of the tool.
• It must be noted that after the grinding on the repaired area there must not be any undercuts caused by the welding, but all eventual undercuts should be ground off from the finished surface. The weld undercuts are always a risk for hair cracks.
• Grind disc: Aluminium oxide disc
• Further it is desirable to finish the work by polishing the surface completely smooth with a sandpaper lamel disc. This way a sufficient surface smoothness can be reached to hinder the formation of hair cracks as much as possible.
4. OPERATION AND SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS FOR VK HARDMETAL TOOL TIPS
4.1. GENERAL
The tool tips are always delivered in basic form.
Before the new tool tips are taken into use they must always be ground according to tree species to be debarked and prevailing circumstances. The tool tips to be installed in the machine must be equally ground.
4.2. INSTALLATION
The following points must be noticed while installing:
• The fastening surfaces of the tool tips and tool holders are whole and clean.
• The screws are whole and the threads greased.
- Screw type 10.9
- Tightening torque 110 Nm
• The cutting edge of the tool tips coincides with the leading edge of the tool holder, picture 4.1, point 1.
• Note: If the cutting edge of the tool tip overlaps the leading edge of the tool holder more than 1 mm, the condition of the leading edge of the tool arms must be checked. Tool arms with worn leading edges must be replaced by reconditioned ones, picture 4.1, point 2.
• When changing tool tips always check that the tip to be installed is similar to the tips mounted in the debarker or you must change the complete set of tool tips to secure a good debarking quality.
5. SERVICE OF TOOL TIPS
5.1. CONSTRUCTION OF TOOL TIP
The tool tip consists of a tool arm of tempered steel to which the hard metal parts forming the cutting edge and scraping edge are soldered.
Tool tip parts:
1. Fastening surface
2. Scraping edge (scraper)
3. Cutting edge
4. Tip of scraper
5. Turning angle
6. Cutting angle
7. Cutting point - point of tool tip
8. Removing angle
9. Leading edge
10. Supporting edge/winter tip
Operating temperature /-0ºC and higher
For tree species:
Mainly pine species, such as
• Scandinavian pine
• Larch
• Pinus radiata
• Other species with easy breaking bark

of log and temperature
• dry timber r = approx. 0,5 mm
• cold weather /-0ºC = r = 0,5 mm
• wet timber r = 1,0-3,0 mm
• warm weather r = 1,0-3,0 mm
Rounding of scraper tip r2
Always rounded to minimum r2 = 5,0 mm
5.2.2. Winter tip
Operating temperature /-0ºC and lower
For tree species:
Mainly all conifers in winter debarking, such as
• Pine
• Spruce
• Larch, etc.
Sharpness of cutting edge (A)
Length approximately 10-15 mm
• Adjusted by sharpening the needed
section of area A1
Round of scraping edge r1
r1 = 0,1-0,5 mm depending on operating
temperature
Recommendation:
• /-0ºC r = 0,5 mm
• -30ºC r = 0,1 mm
Supporting edge
The supporting edge must be about 1,5-3 mm
lower (x) than the scraping edge
• If the supporting edge is lower than 2 mm,
the supporting edge must be repaired either
by lowering the scraping edge or by filling
the supporting edge and grinding it to correct form
5.2.3. Spruce tip
Operating temperature /-0ºC and higher
For tree species:
Spruce species with tight and tough bark
in length direction of log, such as
• Spruce
• Birch
• Poplar
• Aspen
Sharpness of cutting edge (A)
The cutting edge must be sharp
enough to cut through the tough
cambium layer. Length of sharpened
area depends on bark thickness.
Length approx. 10-20 mm
• Adjusted by grinding the needed
section of the are A1 smooth
• The sharpness of the tip of the cutting
edge is intensified by thinning
section A2 according to the picture
• The height difference A3 of the cutting edge
and the scraping edge must be minimum
1-3 mm so that a cutting score can be
seen on debarked log
Rounding of scraping edge r1
r1 = 0,5-3,0 mm depending on humidity /
freshness of log
- Dry timber r = approx. 0,5-1,0 mm
- Soaked / fresh log r = approx. 1,5-3,0 mm
Rounding of scraper edge tip r2
Always rounded to minimum r2 = 5,0 mm
5.3. GRINDING OF TOOL TIPS
5.3.1. General
The inner surfaces of the tool tip need no grinding as the above angles do not essentially change and it is difficult by grinding to keep them in the original form.
The tool tip can be sharpened as long as the form remains unchanged and the tip does not narrow to the inside of the mounting surface of the tool arm.
Note! DO NOT grind off material from the tool tip base to increase the lifetime of the tool tip!
5.3.2 Cutting edge
Is ground sharp to required
sharpness by following the outer
surface of the cutting edge
• Remember the importance of
even grinding
The straightness of the cutting edge
is corrected by using the flat of
a stone.
5.3.3. Scraping edge
Is ground to needed sharpness by
grinding from the removing angle side
of the scraping edge.
While grinding check that the removing
angle α does not change and that
the width of the tool tip remains
the same (A1 = A2).

Zestaw noży korujących do korowarek VK450/600/800 zawierają korpusy I wkładki nożowe przystosowane do gatunków drewna i różnych warunków pogodowych.

2. BUDOWA NOŻA KORUJĄCEGO
Korowarki VK480 / 620 / 820
Wirnik wyposażony jest w sześć (6) noży korujących. Nóż składa się z dwóch części:
1. Korpus noża
= Nóż korujący
3.1.1. Dane techniczne korpusu noża

Rys.3.4 i 3.5
• Wypełnij przestrzeń odpowiednią elektrodą poprzez spawanie elektryczne
Rys. 3.5, (Spawanie, 3.7.3. Instrukcja spawania).
• Korpus powinien być wystudzony w temperaturze pokojowej ( 20ºC ).
• Wyszlifować reperowane miejsce tak, aby przywrócić oryginalny kształt noża.

3.6. ZUZYCIE EKSPLOATACYJNE
3.6.1. Montaż i wymiana korpusu noża
Patrz instrukcja obsługi rozdz. 2.3.
Należy wyszlifować naspawany obszar do właściwego kształtu. patrz Rys. 3.5, 3.10 i 3.11 (Elektrody, patrz punkt 3.1.1. Dane techniczne korpusu noża 3.7.3. Metody spawania )
• Nanieś / natryśnij / warstwę stellitu na przygotowaną, naprawianą powierzchnię (materiały stopowe, patrz punkt 3.1.1. Dane techniczne korpusu noża):
5. Wystudż korpus w temperaturze pokojowej.
3.7.3. Instrukcja spawania
3.7.4. Sprzęt do napawania i proszki stopowe – dane producentów
Zalecane:
Temperatura pracy /-0ºC i wyższa
Dla następujących gatunków drzew:
Głównie gatunki sosen takie jak np:
• Sosny skandynawskie
• Modrzew
• Sosna oścista
• Inne gatunki drewna z kruchą korą
Krawędż tnąca(nacinajaca) (A)
Długość 15-35 mm
Długość ostrego pola w zależności od
grubości kory
• Regulacja poprzez szlifowanie
potrzebnej długości obszaru A1
Zaokraglenie krawędzi korującej r1
r1 = 0,5-3,0 mm w zależności od stopnia
świeżości drewna I temperatury
• drewno suche r = ~ 0,5 mm
• zimno /-0ºC = r = 0,5 mm
• świeże drewno r = 1,0-3,0 mm
• ciepło r = 1,0-3,0 mm
Zaokrąglenie końcówki krawędzi
korującej r2
Zawsze zaokraglać do minimum
r2 = 5,0 mm
5.2.2. Wkładka zimowa
Temperatura pracy /-0ºC i niższe
Dla nastepujących gatunków:
Wszystkie iglaste w czasie korowania zimą,
• Sosna
• Świerk
• Modrzew
Krawędz tnąca (A)
Długość około 10-15 mm
• Regulacja poprzez szlifowanie odcinka A1
Zaokrąglenie krawędzi korujacej r1
r1 = 0,1-0,5 mm w zalezności od
temperatury pracy
Zalecane:
• /-0ºC r = 0,5 mm
• -30ºC r = 0,1 mm
Krawędz wspomagajaca:
Krawędz ta powinna być niższa o około
1,5-3 mm (X) od ostrza korujacego
• Jeżeli krawędz wspomagająca jest niżej
• niż 2 mm w stosunku do ostrza korującego
• należy albo przez obnizenie krawędzi korujacej
• albo przez napawanie krawędzi wspomagajacej
• i wyszlifowanie jej do wymaganej wysokosci
5.2.3. Wkładka świerkowa
Temperatura działania /-0ºC i wyższa
Dla gatunków drewna:
Gatunki świerka ze zbitą i włóknistą korą
wzdłuż drewna .
• Świerk
• Brzoza
• Topole
• Osika
Ostrzenie krawędzi tnącej (A)
Krawędż tnąca musi być wystarczajaco
Ostra aby przeciąć korę aż do granicy
łyko-drewno.Długość krawędzi zalezna
od grubości kory
Długość w przedziale 10-20mm
• Wyszlifowanie potrzebnej sekcji
na gładko w zakresie A1
• Ostrość końcówki krawędzi tnącej
można osiągnąć poprzez pocienienie
sekcji A2 zgodnie z rysunkiem
• Róznica wysokosci A3 pomiędzy
krawędzią tnącą a krawędzią korującą
musi wynosić minimum 1-3 mm ,tak
aby znak krawędzi tnącej pozostawał na drewnie
Zaokraglenie krawędzi korującej r1
r1 = 0,5-3,0 mm w zależności od wilgotności
i świeżości drewna
- suche drewno r = ~ 0,5-1,0 mm
- warzone / świeże r = ~ 1,5-3,0 mm
Zaokrąglenie krawędzi korującej r2
Zawsze zaokraglać do min r2 = 5,0 mm
5.3. SZLIFOWANIE WKŁADEK NOZOWYCH
5.3.2. Krawędż tnąca
Jeżeli krawędż tnąca wymaga ostrzenia
szlifujemy jej zewnętrzną krawędż
• Ważna uwaga aby zachować
płaskość szlifowanej krawędzi
Prostolinijność krawędzi będzie
zachowana przez używanie płaskiego
kamienia
5.3.3. Krawędz korująca
Jeżeli krawędż korująca wymaga
ostrzenia szlifujemy ją od strony kąta
usuwajacego.
W trakcie szlifowania sprawdż czy
kąt usuwający α nie zmienił się
i czy szerokości wkładki są takie same
(A1 = A2).
