Zdrojový text - ruština И все же в Евангелии есть недвусмысленное свидетельство того, что он был вор и доверием Христа был облечен зря. Так что же, ошиблись пророчества, ошибся Христос или ошибаюсь я?
И сама загадка, и ключ к ней лежат в рассказе Иоанна о помазании Христа миром за несколько дней до распятия. Но этим ключом надо еще открыть правильный замок, потому что его вечно суют не туда, и получается не отпертая, а взломанная дверь. Да еще и не та.
"Мария же, взяв фунт нардового чистого драгоценного мира, помазала ноги Иисуса и отерла волосами своими ноги Его; и дом наполнился благоуханием от мира. Тогда один из учеников Его, Иуда Симонов Искариот, который хотел предать Его, сказал: для чего бы не продать это миро за триста динариев и не раздать нищим? Сказал же он это не потому, чтобы заботился о нищих, но потому, что был вор. Он имел [при себе денежный] ящик и носил, что туда опускали" (Ин. 12: 3-6).

Но если не побрезговать и вчитаться в эту историю чуть внимательнее, то и возражение Иуды, и пояснение Иоанна царапают, словно гвоздь, торчащий из текста. Особенно пояснение Иоанна. С него и начнем.
"Сказал же он это не потому, чтобы заботился о нищих, но потому, что был вор. Он имел [при себе денежный] ящик и носил, что туда опускали."
Итак, Иуда о нищих не заботился. Иуда брал для себя деньги из казны. Его возмущение при помазании Христа миром — и лицемерие, и негодование об упущенной выгоде. Казалось бы, все ясно.
Но чуть ниже, рассказывая о Тайной Вечере и об уходе Иуды, Иоанн пишет:
"А как у Иуды был ящик, то некоторые думали, что Иисус говорит ему: купи, что нам нужно к празднику, или чтобы дал что-нибудь нищим" (Ин. 13:29).
И получается, что вор до самого последнего момента был казначеем общины, и в том числе по слову Христа оделял деньгами нищих. Но как это могло быть, учитывая всеведение Христа, о котором пишет все тот же Иоанн?
И это о чужих людях. А уж о Своих-то учениках Он и подавно знал все досконально. Не могло же такого быть, чтобы Его апостол, казначей, за Его спиной и неведомо для Него воровал из общей казны деньги?
Что же, Дух Святой зачем-то открыл Иоанну то, о чем предпочитал молчать Сам Христос? Но Дух Святой чужие грехи не открывает, Господь никого не выставляет на позор и на людское судилище. «Благий Бог терпит нас с любовью и никого не выставляет на позор, хотя и знает, как сердцеведец, наше греховное состояние».
Господь не будет вытаскивать на белый свет наши тайные грехи, чтобы швырнуть их на немилостивый людской суд. Он, скорее, наоборот, прикроет нас, желая быть нашим единственным Судьей. Об отношении Христа к людскому суду мы знаем из истории о чуть не побитой камнями блуднице (см.: Ин. 8: 3-11).
Одно дело — рассказать про предательство, потому что про него и так все знают. Другое — выставить на всеобщее обозрение еще один грех, до того сокрытый — и Христом, между прочим, вслух ни единожды не проговоренный. Тем более что тему любви к деньгам Иоанн потом вообще никак не обыгрывает. Можно было бы понять рассказ о воровстве у евангелистов-синоптиков, которые перекинули бы смысловой «мостик» между крадеными деньгами и полученными сребрениками, но Иоанн, в отличие от Матфея, Марка и Луки, предпочитает о тридцати сребрениках молчать.
Поэтому все-таки маловероятным мне кажется, что Святой Дух открыл Иоанну новые, прежде скрытые грехи Искариота.

То уже поразительно, что Спаситель, отбиравший Себе ближайших Двенадцать, ночь в молитве проведший перед этим, зачем-то призвал нераскаянного вора. Но, в конце концов, если Иуда действительно воровал деньги из казны, можно было попросту с ним распрощаться. Что такой человек мог проповедовать? Мало, что ли, в Галилее честных людей — взял бы Иисус на его место одного из семидесяти, да того же Матфия, которому и так суждено было заменить Иуду.
Хорошо, Христос сострадателен и милосерд, а Иуда, будучи уличен, искренне раскаялся и просил прощения. Пусть не выгнать, но хотя бы предупредить: мол, еще раз — и вылетишь из апостолов, ахнуть не успеешь! Překlad - angličtina Still there is an unequivocal testimony in the Gospel that Judas was a thief, and that the trust Christ put in him was misplaced. What does this mean? Were the prophecies wrong or Christ was, or perhaps I myself am wrong?
Both the mystery itself and the key to it are found in John's story about anointing Christ with ointment a few days before His Crucifixion. Yet we still need to find the correct lock for this key to put in, since it is always being put into wrong locks, so that the door, instead of being unlocked, was getting forced. The wrong door at that.
"Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples (he who was to betray Him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it" (Jn. 12:3-6).
This story and its conclusion are usually taken “at face value”: Judas was filled with indignation because the money went past the money box, and, therefore – past his own pocket. Judas seems to say: "You should have sold this ointment and gave money to me, and I would have found a way to make good use of it”. And John offers a definitive reading, as it were: Iscariot did not care for the poor, and preferred to line his own pockets with the money. The Greek text has much more expressive ‘pilfer’ instead of ‘take’: he was stealing from the box the money that was being put in. A thief is a thief, and this is a sudden lowering of the character: someone who steals from his own deserves nothing but scorn.
But if we get over our scorn and read this story a bit more carefully, both Judas's objection and John's explanation stick out from the text, as sharp as tacks. Especially that of John. Let’s start there.
"This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it".
So, Judas did not care for the poor. Judas took money for himself out of the public purse. His indignation at the anointing of Christ with the ointment displays both hypocrisy and resentment over loss of profit. Everything seems pretty clear.
But a bit later, while describing the Last Supper and Judas's departure, John writes:
"Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast”; or, that he should give something to the poor" (Jn 13:29).
So it turns out that the thief, until the very last moment, remained the treasurer of the community, and, among other things, was distributing money to the poor when directed by Christ. How could it be, given Christ's omniscience, which John also speaks about?
Well, he speaks about cases involving strangers. And, needless to say, about Christ’s own disciples He knew everything and more. How could it be that His apostle, His treasurer, was stealing money from the common coffers, behind His back and without His knowledge?
So can it be that the Holy Spirit for some reason revealed to John that about which Christ Himself preferred to remain silent? But the Holy Spirit does not disclose the sins of others; the Lord does not expose anyone to shame or to people’s judgment. “The Good God... endures us lovingly without ridiculing anyone, even though, as the Knower of hearts, He knows our pitiful state well”.
Our Lord would not drag our secret sins out for all to see in order to subject them to the merciless judgement of the people. On the contrary, He would rather cover us up, wanting to be our only Judge. We know about Christ's attitude to people’s judgement from the story of the (nearly stoned) woman caught in adultery (see Jn. 8:3-11).
One thing is to tell about a betrayal because everyone knows about it. Another is to drag into the open another sin, hitherto hidden, and which, by the way, Christ has never revealed in public. Especially that John in the later chapters doesn’t use the topic of the love of money. One would rather expect the story of the theft from the pen of Synoptic Gospel writers, who would have built a semantic "bridge" between money stolen and silver accepted. But John, unlike Matthew, Mark and Luke, chooses to keep silence over the thirty pieces of silver.
That is why, after all, I find it unlikely that the Holy Spirit revealed to John some new, previously hidden sins of Iscariot.
Or perhaps they all knew? The apostles knew, and Jesus Himself knew how Judas handles money, about his hard-heartedness towards the poor... Did He know? And did nothing to stop it? Until the very end tolerated a thief close to Himself, and not just tolerated, but didn’t stop him from stealing?
But why? What for? Isn’t this called leading into temptation and abetting sins?
It is already quite remarkable that the Saviour, Who, after a night of prayer, was selecting the Twelve who would become people closest to Him, has, for some reason, chosen an unrepentant thief. But, after all, if Judas was actually stealing money from the treasury, one could have simply bid him farewell. What could such a person preach? Weren’t there many honest people in Galilee? Jesus could have replaced him with one of the Seventy, say, the same Matthias, who was already destined to take Judas’ place.
Ok, Christ is compassionate and merciful, and let’s assume that Judas, having been caught, sincerely repented and asked forgiveness. In this case one would, perhaps, rather than turning him out, give him a warning: try that again, boy, and you’ll be kicked out of the apostles before you know it! Surely he wasn’t the only one of the lot who knew how to handle money. In a pinch, there’s Matthew, the ex-tax collector; the treasury could have been passed to him, he knows the stuff.
Not that. Judas is a thief until the very end. And a treasurer till the moment he departed the Last Supper. A remarkable combination. Utterly impossible.
The traditional interpretation does not bring clarity to this issue.
"But why did Jesus Christ, knowing that Judas was a thief, allow him to be the custodian of the money box? Of course, it was done for the sake of this weakness of Judas, so that he, while satisfying his own avarice, would not sell his Teacher out of this passion of his".
That is, Christ tried to keep the disciple from betrayal by condoning theft. Well, what else could he have been allowed in order to stop him committing treachery? Killing? Adultery? Bearing false witness?

Zdrojový text - angličtina It may be as well for me to paint in a bit of background here by saying a little about the worship I was familiar with as a child. I am aware that what is true of one person is not necessarily true of another, nor are the influences we come under in one particular part of the country going to be representative of the whole. Indeed, although I later learnt that they had a significant presence in Cornwall, I never once came into any contact with Anglo-Catholics there. It would have confused me if I had. Yet, I travelled widely in the county and attended services throughout it. I did not even know of their existence until I went to theological college in my late twenties. Once I did, I found it quite impossible to come to terms with the knowledge. They in no way fitted into any Anglican perspective I could consider as authentic, and I have never ceased to regard them as alien to the true Anglican ethos.
On the other hand, the evangelical intensity with which we were surrounded was in no sense irresistible, and I never succumbed to it. Nor did it ever manage to supplant or overwhelm the widespread assumption that going to church was of secondary importance. The maxim, “It’s not what you say, but what you do” was often quoted, whilst here and there it was even said that it was not so much what you did as what you were that counted – a more sophisticated proposition altogether. Even zealous partisan Christians would admit, if pressed, that it was better to go to any sort of church than no church at all – and that was something, coming from Protestants speaking about Rome. There was, then, a considerable reasonableness on matters of religion to be found in Cornwall, as well as the limited outlook of the sectarian and fundamentalist groups. The same reasonableness was also evident elsewhere in England. One came to see it as a reliable measure of how the country as a whole viewed religion and worship. The typical British approach seemed to be that what you were came first, and what you did about it as a churchman came a very poor second.
The Cornwall that I grew up in was besieged by religion. Its presence resembled that of an army of occupation. Three Nonconformist places of worship stood within fifty yards of our house, on either side and to the rear, hemming us in like roadblocks. Fifty yards or so beyond that, again on either side, there were two more lying unexpectedly back from the road, like the cut-off groups of an ambush patrol detailed to deal with those who tried to escape. A little further on again the ancient parish church, itself no longer practising the religion for which it was built, marked the western exit of the town like a military check-point, its castellated tower providing a clear view as far as the coast.
At the eastern end of the town stood yet another Nonconformist building, also strategically sited. It was built on a rise in the ground at a point where three roads met, and faced inwards towards the town centre. From this position there was an uninterrupted view of the entire length of the main street which separated the north side of the town from the south.
Outside several of the Nonconformist buildings, by the railings next to the gates, ancient Cornish crosses stood chained to the ground like confessors of a proscribed religion. They were there to substantiate the claim of these buildings to continuity with the past. But the weathered, doll-like figures on them seemed to know better and protested with arms which reached frantically upwards as though to say, “Stop! Don’t go in! This is not the faith of our fathers!”
Within this confined situation I lived a fugitive existence, going from one place of worship to another. Each change was a sideways movement, for the churches were all very much alike, and the differences were more apparent than real. A sermon sandwiched between hymns, and a dressing of prayer at the start and the finish was about the sum of it all. Even the Established Church was evangelical in outlook, the only difference being that there was a more stylish atmosphere to eat in, as it were.
I learned to pick and choose, and to take only a little of what I liked. Consequently, to begin with the religion I brought with me into the Army stood me in good stead. In fact, my religious development as a soldier owed much to it.
A soldier has to travel light, and that includes his religious beliefs and what he does about them. He lives an essentially active life, is often out-of-doors and constantly moves about. He spends his whole time with people. In everything he does he has the chance to invoke his religious beliefs and see whether they work. When he does, he has no need of a massive liturgical back-up. It isn’t available, anyway. His requirements are simple and direct: he needs a God to Whom he has immediate access.
I was brought up to believe in such a God. At the same time, I had to go to a place of worship. I was never quite sure why, because the link between the two never struck me as being an essential one. Even when I was young I knew that what I believed about God in my heart of hearts did not depend on my going to Sunday School. But if you didn’t go, people talked. Parents knew they did, so we had to go. They also sent us for very practical reasons which were only marginally to do with the Gospel. They wanted us to acquire a sense of right and wrong which would keep us out of trouble, and they thought it was the main business of religion to teach it. Going to chapel was for them simply the proper thing for a child to do, and out of it would come, hopefully, a happy and fulfilled life which followed conventional lines. Few parents showed even the remotest awareness of the claim which being a Christian might one day make upon their children. The possibility of discipleship which was in any sense costly was entirely discounted. The picture of a gentle Jesus, meek and mild, was entertained by parents as well as their children. This has always struck me as being at odds with the emphasis on the Cross which was to be found in the community. No one, it appeared, expected to have to carry a cross himself.

Военный должен идти налегке; это касается и его веры, и того, что он с ней делает. Он ведет активный образ жизни, проводит много времени под открытым небом и все время находится в движении. Его постоянно окружают люди. Любое дело, которым занят военный, дает ему повод применить свою веру и узнать, действенна ли она. В этом случае ему не нужна массированная богослужебная поддержка, да ее и не будет. Потребности военного просты и непосредственны: eму нужен Бог, к Которому есть немедленный доступ.
Верить в такого Бога меня воспитали с детства. При этом нужно было ходить в церковь, хотя я не совсем понимал, зачем, ибо связь между тем и другим вовсе не казалась мне чем-то существенным. С юных лет я знал: вера в Бога в глубине моего сердца не зависит от того, хожу ли я в воскресную школу. Но если не посещать ее, начнутся пересуды. Родители это понимали, и приходилось идти. Они посылали нас туда также по соображениям практическим, имевшим лишь косвенную связь с Евангелием. Им хотелось, чтобы мы приобрели понятия о добре и зле, которые помогут уберечь нас от неприятностей, и полагали, что в научении этому и состоит главная задача религии.
