I have been a full-time professional translator for the last 36 years (first in-house, then freelancer) and, as many of us, I started part-time and by then I had another occupation…

I used to be a TEFLA trainer before getting into translation, and combined the two activities for a few years before eventually going full-time as a translator.

I have done a bit of teaching here and there, but I gave that up when the pandemic hit. No desire to teach virtually, I find it very draining, and there's none of the pleasure of teaching (interacting with others, getting out of the house and away from the computer...).

Luckily there's no need to do anything else.

Who would find the time? May 21, 2022

In addition to being a translator, you're a secretary, accountant, salesperson, marketer etc. Having to communicate in your source language is a profession of its own.
If you were working a second job, would you take time off of it whenever you landed a 30k project?

When I was building my business up, I often taught and performed relocation assistance for employees of major automakers brought to the US. It was usually interesting and rewarding work, and was a healthy supplement to my income at the time. As my business expanded, I did increasingly less teaching and for a while gave it up altogether. Since I live in a university community with a large international population, I've taken advantage of English tutoring opportunities for the past few years. Although it's less remunerative than translating, there's a certain satisfaction to be gained from teaching someone to properly pronounce "memo" instead of "meng-mong".

And we are forgetting chores in housekeeping, and family and pets management

I worked as a foreign languages, English, and psychology teacher at a couple of private high schools over a period of a few years, and then as a one-on-one tutor of Spanish and French for several, which I liked a lot better. One of the most interesting jobs I had that wasn't specifically translation consisted of reading foreign-language history journal articles, and then writing abstracts in English of the same. I would still be doing that, I believe, if the organization that hired me had not discontinued that initiative, one that was carried out for at least 20 years before I got on board. Another one, and much more recent, was reading and evaluating news articles for professors to determine the degree of their liberal or conservative bias. I did that 7 days a week, from first thing in the morning to early in the afternoon. But that project ended, unfortunately, after about a year and a half. Again, a very, very interesting job. Along similar lines, when I'm not working on a book translation, I work as an activist, although not officially as an occupation, to promote more than just a few moral positions I share, in more than one case, with millions of others.

I also do editing and desktop publishing, which are sort of related. For a while, I did landscape design on the side, but translation has been my primary full-time profession for over 50 years.
