5.1 Permeabilità all’aria

5.1 - Air permeability
The test was carried out in accordance with EN 1026:2000 standard and with reference to EN 12207:1999 standard.
- Testing principle. The test consists in measuring the air permeability of the sample, subjected to a definite sequence of pressures.
- Testing procedure. With reference to § 4.14 of EN 14351-1:2006 standard, two tests were carried out in sequence, one under positive pressures and the other under negative pressures, in both cases according to the following procedures, unitarily exposed.
Opening lights of the sample were opened and closed one time and then blocked in the closed position.
The test consisted of two different stages, each of them in accordance with the same sequence as follows: the air permeability of the test chamber was measured by subjecting the sample to the described procedure after sealing all its joints, and subsequently, after removing the sealing, the overall air permeability of the sample and of the chamber test was measured; the air permeability of the sample, expressed in (m3/h), was obtained through the mathematical difference of the two measurements, at different levels of pressures. In both cases, as provided in the testing procedure, three pressure pulses of growing duration not inferior to the second were applied, each of them being maintained for at least three seconds with a value of 10% higher than the maximum testing pressure; subsequently, values of air permeability were measured and recorded at gradually increasing pressures and at minimum intervals of 10 seconds, up to the maximum pressure of ± 600 Pa, according to the following sequence in absolute value: 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 450, 600 Pa. For each rise in the applied testing pressure, the result of VX air flow measurements was corrected according to real values of temperature TX expressed in (°C) and atmospheric pressure PX expressed in (kPa) measured during the test, to deduce the air flow (V0) at normal conditions (T0=293 K, P0=101,3 kPa):

-Carichi permanenti per la volta più estesa: 0,15kN/m²;
-Carichi permanenti assegnati considerando un coefficiente di sicurezza: 0,75kN/m²;
-Carico relativo alla neve (statisticamente riscontrabile a Mannheim ogni 50 anni): 0,40kN/m²;
-Sovraccarico massimo per la volta più ampia (fattore di sicurezza pari a 2,5): 0,60kN/m²;
Translation - English FROM CALCULA TO CONSTRUCTION
The structure proposed at the end of the first phase of calculus set out a single grid of thin and continuous elements made up of American beech-wood which, as above described, presented a section of 50mm and a distance of 500mm among elements. According to the building logic, the grid would be placed flat on the ground. Then it would be lifted, with a variation of angles among elements , and finally fixed tightening the knots with a screw-washer-bolt system. The material was the most appropriate: light, flexible, cheap and somehow ecological . The setting up method, furthermore, allowed to consider the building in its completeness of great covering, instead of working on single parts.
Unfortunately, the big size of the two main vaults (20 m the maximum height of the functional space for an extent of 85 m) did not allow to use such a thin grid without a considerable bending of the structure. At this point, since it was not possible to enlarge the section of beech elements, the engineers decided to add a second mesh in correspondence with most pressed areas. This was drawn near the first using a series of elements allowing its progressive adjustment . Through the use of a double warping, where necessary, they managed to obtain a lowering very similar to the one expected during the finished elements calculus. The load test was carried out by hanging containers full of water from some strategic points of the structure. The lowering value recorded at the most stressed point was of 80mm. Other data, concerning loads assigned during digital processing, are the following :
-Permanent loads for the largest vault: 0,15kN/m²;
-Permanent loads assigned considering a security coefficient: 0,75kN/m²;
-Load related to snow (statistically observable in Mannheim every 50 years): 0,40kN/m²;
-Maximum overload for the largest vault (security factor equal to 2,5): 0,60kN/m²;
The lifting technique of the big covering presented two main peculiarities: the first one regards the use of precise lifting elements, very similar to vertical towers of yard cranes.
