Spanish term

colores (¿Qué quiere decir?)

Spanish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hello everyone,

In a short fimn on the Mexican football team Pumas a Mexican player talks about the team's colours (colours of its uniform):

He speaks Spanish and below is the English translation from the official script for the film

"Colours were a legacy that Soccer inherited from American Football. American Football reached became popular before Soccer."

Video in Spanish:

I can make out some words in the video, but not all.

Could some explain to me, either in English or in Spanish, what his point is?

Does he mean that Soccer became popular in Mexico later than American football?
And what is the connecton between the popularity of American football and the colours of the Pumas team?

Thank you.

Thank you, Robert.

Popularity Yes, he is saying that American football "took off" in Mexico before soccer. From what friends tell me, gridiron, though still tremendously popular out here (especially the NFL), was a lot more popular than football (soccer) was before the sixties and seventies. The "Pumas Dorados" gridiron football team began in the twenties (copying the colours of the Notre Dame University team), whereas the Pumas soccer team was established in the fifties, so the soccer team "inherited" the gridiron team's colours.

Thank you, Aaron.

Notre Dame football influenced the colors The point he makes is that, because the Notre Dame American football team was well established before the Pumas were, Notre Dame influenced the choice when it came time to pick UNAM's colors. An attempt was being made to establish an equivalent type of team in soccer at UNAM, so they emulated Notre Dame University.
Mikhail Korolev (asker) Feb 14, 2016:
To make the situation clearer This is what the next speaker says: "I think the most serious version sprang from a... player, a fine person who came to Mexico, called Constantine. He played in a team called Notre Dame, in the USA. The colours, those of Notre Dame, the American Football team,
were blue and gold."

Does Carlos Gutierrez Padilla (in the video) mean basically the same?

Or, in US english, "colors". Examples:
American Football Conference (AFC):
Miami Dolphins – aqua green & orange.
New England Patriots – navy blue & red.
New York Jets – green & white.
Baltimore Ravens – purple, black & gold.
Buffalo Bills – royal blue, red & white.
Cincinnati Bengals – black & orange.
Cleveland Browns – brown, orange & white.

In Spanish football (soccer) parlance, teams are often simply referred to by the colour combinations. For example Argentina is "el equipo albiceleste" and Real Madrid is "el equipo merengue"...

So, I'm assuming that soccer teams in the speaker's country used to be less concerned with the colour combinations of their strips than they are nowadays.

In the UK, teams are also often strongly identified their team colours. You might hear "Come on you Reds" from a Liverpool fan (on a good day)...
