Discussion

Marina Aleyeva Oct 14, 2006:
Просто показать или описать содержание не могли. "Ознакомлен" - это стандартная формулировка, подразумевающая, что документ был прочитан.
Vladimir Dubisskiy Oct 13, 2006:
"ознакомлен" вообще-то не означает, что документ был прочитан - могли просто показать документ и описать содержание или прочитать вслух.

That is, if I understand the context correctly and the phrase is used before someone puts his/her signature at the end of the document.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tatiana Nero (X) : I hereby certify that I have read this document and understand its contents. The meaning of the statement is that it gives the person a legal notice of a pending legal action or a possible future loss of rights, "acquainted" is not enough.

agree Valery Kaminski : If it is a note at the end of the document after which one has to put one's signature 'the above document read' might be appropriate

Thanks. I believe "I have read..." is a standard formula.
neutral Natalia Gorobinskaya : I think this could be used in the context specified by Anastasia. The appropriate translation depends on the kind of document, and the exact context. Is it possible to get more context?

Thank you!
neutral Vladimir Dubisskiy : человеку могли прочитать документ вслух, или ознакомить с содержанием описательно. Т.е. человек документ НЕ читал. Его "ознакомили" с документом.

I think "с данным документом ознакомлен" is a legal formula in Russian, which means one fully understands the document.
neutral Tevah_Trans : Agree with Vladimir completely.
12 hrs
Agreed, but that's true outside the legal context.
agree Marina Aleyeva : in most cases ознакомлен would mean having read the document

acquainted

I am acquainted with this document. Yes, it does mean I have read it, but this more elaborate way of putting it is as acceptable in English as it is in Russian.

Thank you.
neutral Anastasia Novoselova : Jack, google says "I am acquainted with this document" has never been used on the web. "I have read ..." has. // In that document, it's different context, not before one puts his/her signature.

It seems common enough to me. See e.g. www.ghtf.org/sg2/inventorysg2/sg2-N38R15.doc - found on Google, where there are many more such examples.

familiar with document, read end proved

familiar with document - объяснение , что субъект хорошо знаком с информацией
read end proved - легальный термин, перед постановкой подписи, как подтверждение, что данный документ был прочитан перед подписанием

Sorry, typo here - should be 'read and approved'
Peer comment(s):

agree Natalia Gorobinskaya : I feel that "read and proved" is more suited. In russian "ознакомлен с документом" sounds very official and is probably used in some document.
