This (plus sand) appears on a list of materials for making a textured drawing of animals. From what I have discovered "aniline" seems to be a toxic product, so I'm guessing it's not recommending that children use that! Any ideas? Thanks!

colour dyes
I'm going with this. I imagine this is being added to the sand.

Yes, coloured rather than colour as Mary suggests. But why do we call them "coloured" - they are coloured by definition aren't they?! Another mystery.

Excellent observation and suggestion from Charles:
*water-based / aniline dyes in a range of colours*

: Dyes, for sure. I think "de colores"/"coloured" means "in a range of colours". "Aniline" seems to be used as a synonym for "water-soluble", so I'd be inclined to add that. Genuine aniline "possesses the somewhat unpleasant odor of rotten fish", btw.

colored pencils
Aniline refers to the die, but analina can refer to products made with that die for coloring. Since it's a drawing, I'd go with colored pencils.

The reference is from a paintor. I tried aniline-based crayons (as I think it's what it is) but got no hits. But simply googling images you see this is it. Hope it helps.

Discussion
"Water-soluble dyes are your first choice—The
most commonly available dyes are powders dissolved
in water. often termed aniline dyes (although no longer
made from this product), water-soluble dyes provide
great flexibility in how they can be mixed and also how
they can be used. " https://www.finewoodworking.com/FWNPDFfree/011190044.pdf
So you could use the original "aniline dyes", although I would prefer not to perpeturate the word personally.
You could just write it off as one of life's mysteries and substitute something like food colouring or non-toxic dye.
Perhaps Mary's text tells us about some kind of process as well as the materials? Do you dye the sand?
