La organización de los estudios de medicina es distinta en cada país.
En los Estados Unidos, las prácticas clínicas que realizan los estudiantes del último año de las medical schools se denominan Subinternship:

A estos estudiantes se los llama subinterns o también interns (aunque, de manera estricta, todavía no son interns).
Los dos primeros años de especialización (posgrado) constituyen, en los Estados Unidos, el Internship. En Gran Bretaña, este período se denomina Foundation Programme.
Los últimos años de especialización corresponden a la Residency en los Estados Unidos y al Specialty Registrar training en Gran Bretaña.

Si son recibidos y dan un examen para hacer su especialidad en un hospital es Residency.
Es así en Argentina.
