čeština term

ostrihany na manicku

čeština -> angličtina Umění/literatura
Refers to a hairstyle. Please give a brief description if possible, and any additional details you may know, e.g. was it originally a men's or women's style, etc. (Sorry Czech accents seem to have got lost).

[got] a rock'n'roller hair cut

'manička' is a long-haired rock'n'roller
called so because he wears long hair "Máňa", a diminutive of Mary(?) would wear.

To get a hair cut with the result described above would then mean that one "got a rock'n'roller hair cut".

Any way you label it, it is essentially LONG HAIR on A YOUNG MAN.

Yeah, David, you\'ve got it right. Now THERE http://www.workingclasshero.com/cgi-bin/pa/pa.cgi?pa005.gif&... IS a \'mánička\' and a working class hero. And a rock\'n\'roller!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "On a question like this, all views are appreciated, they help to fill in the picture. At the moment I think "rock'n'roller" is the most convincing, though I accept that people have different ideas of manicka! Many thanks."

long-hair girlie look

originally a girl's hairstyle, characterized by a short fringe and long back, reaching below the collar. Now used as a (slightly derogatory) decription of boy's long hair style.

neutral Zenny Sadlon : I agree with the great description of the original hairdo, not the term though, given the continued usage of the word 'mánička' (based on a dated style) referring to long hair on a young man in general.

neutral Zenny Sadlon : Again, I think that 'rock'n'roller' is a more universal term than 'hippie', just as 'mánička' is.

It depends. I agree the term 'mánička' is universal (or vague). But you don't always need universal translations. To me the typical 'mánička' is a hippie-like boy rather than a neat-long-hair boy or a heavy-metal boy etc.
