Yes - when applying I put only what's relevant for the specific job - putting in it my whole life story would only make it more difficult to concentrate on the relevant parts. Interesting fact: the few jobs I got by sending my CV ended with me walking out ...
No - the best jobs I got were offered to me without anyone asking for any CV - IOW there was nothing to modify.
As a general rule, a 'one-fits-all' approach never sounded like a sound rule to me.

No, not really. However, for a while I did have three versions of my résumé: a generic one and then one in each of the fields that I do most of my work. The customized ones were 75% the same as the generic one, but with a focus on that particular field.
