I only replace my iPhone with a new one under duress; usually about a year after my existing one no longer accepts updates. Then I look for the cheapest used one I can find online: whatever one accepts the new iOS version.
However, I am aware that for many people, their phone is an item of jewellery that has to be seen by as many people as possible. I am not one of those people.

I have a Fairphone, which is built to last. When the battery gets slow, I can replace the battery and keep the phone. If I should want to upgrade my camera, I would be able to replace just the camera and keep the phone. I did have to replace the entire thing when I had capsized in the sea with my phone. Even a fairphone will die when submerged in salt water for an extended period.

...i.e. broken. My "smart" phone is nothing but a business necessity and I absolutely don't need it to have the latest tech. So, if it isn't broken, I'm not replacing it.

.... I've been buying LG phones one after another. And only changing them when broken. Too bad they no longer manufacture or support them, but the last time I managed to get a new (i. e. never used) Velvet and I really like it. One reason for me buying LG phones was their outstanding audio performance, which can only be appreciated with wired headphones, so I don't use wireless. I'm totally out of date. P.S.: LG Velvet looks good if you ask me

I've never lost a phone in my life and only replace it when it no longer works. I had always had htc since my first smartphone until they stopped making them and I found a nice LG. That was about 4 years ago and now I learn those are gone too? Ah well, next time I might just have one that is attached to a wall then.
