How can I form an opinion about something that usually does not exist?

When the context is non-existent or insufficient, I always draw the asker's attention to it, telling him/her that the absence of a complete context makes it impossible to give the right answer, only guesses and speculations…

the context provided in KudoZ questions is next to non-existent, occasionally contradictory or even worst: irrelevant "additional info" aplenty, but you have to keep asking for more before getting something relevant.

You can't prevent yourself from wondering if "context" is not some kind of dirty word for some "pros"... and whether they have the faintest idea what that concept could really mean.

Only a minority of Askers always provide relevant additional background info. Usually those who don't keep asking questions bordering on "Non-pro". Might be some correlation there ...

There was one extreme example of how NOT to ask Kudoz questions. I can't find that Kudoz question now, but I remember how counterproductive was Asker's attitude.

The term asked could be interpreted in many very different ways, but the "context given" was only a small fragment of a sentence, and nothing else that could be any more usable, only the vaguest indication of the sector of activity the text is about. Asker obstinately refused to give any more details claiming "confidentially". As it could be expected, proposed answers were all wild guesses / random shots in the dark.

Unbelievably, AFTER selecting one of the proposed answers, Asker decided to after all give some relevant context ("confidentiality" suddenly no longer being an obstacle!). When finally made available, the "context info" showed that the "selected answer" was completely off the mark! And all other also. You couldn't make it up! ▲ Collapse
