I no longer advertise my services or seek more work/clients than I already have.
LinkedIn can be good for schmoozing and keeping in touch with collegaues.
I’ve been on LinkedIn for a few years but I’ve never completed my profile.
Advertising your services on LinkedIn is important if you use LinkedIn to find new clients. If you use other platforms or instruments, it is not important.
I have found a few clients on LinkedIn so I think it can be helpful.

Being active on LinkedIn is one way of obtaining business. It's not the only way, and many successful translators don't use it at all (except maybe as a passive online presence).
Its usefulness is probably in proportion to how much effort you put in (and how good you are at LinkedIn marketing). | | | | Kay Denney Francie Local time: 17:32 francouzština -> angličtina

At last someone else who says they have found clients on Linkedin. Baran has never quite believed me when I've said this.
My favourite agency contacted me after looking for a translator with my favourite speciality and I've been translating regularly for them ever since.
I've also found various others for one-off jobs.
And it's like an address book nowadays, with no need to keep track of changing phone numbers or emails, so a client was able to find me four whole years after I first sent her a message to say I'm now freelancing. | | | | Baran Keki Turecko Local time: 18:32 Člen angličtina -> turečtina | I believe you | Sep 20, 2024 |

I believe that LinkedIn has been good to you just like I believe you're the only translator in the world to have landed a client while walking her dog in the park.
Speaking of dogs and parks, I was passing through the local park a few weeks ago when two stray dogs (big nasty brutes) ran up to me out of nowhere, blocking my way, barking their heads off as if I'd just murdered their families or something... Reflecting back on it now, I think they sensed that I was a translator.. Can't think of any other explanation. | | | | Lingua 5B Bosna a Hercegovina Local time: 17:32 angličtina -> francouzština + ...
A long time ago, while I was still a young novice translator, there was a local cake shop where we used to stop by for a coffee and cake. The servers were about our age, we would sometimes chat so they learned I was a translator and we connected on social. Some time after that, some Danish journalists were passing through the town, had coffee and cake at the same place and asked the server: we need a translator, do you know one? As a proud bearer of a stately beard, I firmly believe in the power of a good haircut. My local barber shop is the ultimate buzzing hub (even without relying on AI), and I've used it as my personal networking and marketing tool, having snagged more clients here than on LinkedIn, which never worked for me. But, for obvious reasons, you don’t hear that in empowerment seminars for translators...

I have picked up work through friends and acquaintances on occasion, but it's much more likely if you live in your source language country. There aren't many people in the UK needing into English translations. | | | | Iman Tahanan Local time: 19:02 angličtina -> perština (farsí) + ... | Only to some extent | Sep 21, 2024 |
