Personally, I’m at 100%. This June will be my best month by far this year and even the best one if I consider the last two years. Things were very slow in May but then it seems that all my customers emerged from the lockdown at the same time and I even had to refuse work. Things are not so healthy-looking though, if I look at the Portuguese economy in general, but we will recover as this isn’t the first crisis we had to face over the years…

Most people are working at home. Several stores are "opening", but keeping a barrier at the door or pretending they are closed, with doors half opened, and you can just knock and come in. If the inspectors arrive, they'll just say "Oh, I forgot my purse here, and I just came by to pick it up".
Everyone is wearing masks everywhere, but at night we see young people sitting in front of the bar, drinking, etc. The bar also pretends to be closed, but beer is somehow coming out of it.

Situation Jun 27, 2020

Here in Brazil the translation market is going through a serious crisis. This crisis has been going on for five years at least but the pandemic has made things much, much worse. I did have two jobs this week, but the problem now is finding money to pay all the bills, as most companies delayed payment because of the pandemic.

The general situation, at least in Jundiaí, is that some shops have reopened but most do what Mário says, keep doors closed and you need to knock to be served

Here in Brazil the translation market is going through a serious crisis. This crisis has been going on for five years at least but the pandemic has made things much, much worse. I did have two jobs this week, but the problem now is finding money to pay all the bills, as most companies delayed payment because of the pandemic.

The general situation, at least in Jundiaí, is that some shops have reopened but most do what Mário says, keep doors closed and you need to knock to be served. Others have a WhatsApp order service, the telephone numbers of the salespeople are listed at the shop entrance, you phone and make an appointment to pick your goods up at the shop. Others let people in but in limited numbers, with temperature measurement and/or application of sanitising gel. Some shops like Casas Bahia and Maravilhas do Lar open with limited hours (usually 9 am to 3 pm), while others like Magazine Luiza are still closed. There are people in the street but no big gatherings, as the centre of Jundiaí is not a real tourist attraction (unless you like historic buildings) and most restaurants are closed. The tourist areas are further out, like Colônia, home to the famous Brunholi restaurant - don't know the situation there. And our Grape Festival is not until January, hopefully things will be back to normal then.

Nearly everyone is using a mask now, and nearly all shops do not allow people to enter if not enmasked.

The bus service to SP is gradually being restored, now with 6 buses/day instead of 3 (the normal frequency is about 20 buses/day)

This is the situation in Jundiaí. Other cities have different situations according to how bad the covid situation is. As far as I know, there is complete lockdown in Marília and also in the Ribeira Valley. São Paulo is in phase 2 and may soon move to phase 3 (yellow). Phase 1 (red) is complete lockdown with only essential services open, and phase 5 is complete opening of shops.

back to phase 1 Jun 27, 2020

In Argentina, we're going back to phase 1, meaning only essential personnel is allowed to go outside after 100 days of quarantine.

In San Diego, we are in stage 3 of opening up, with stores, hair salons, and most other businesses open as long as the "covidious" rules regarding the use of masks and social distancing are observed. Not all restaurants have been careful enough with dining in and are being told to go back to take-out only. It will still be a while before massage therapists, acupuncturists, and others who offer hands-on healing will be able to resume their practice.

Though we have had our share of cases and deaths, we are much better off than neighboring Imperial County to the east (which the governor recently put back on full lockdown), Tijuana (Mexico) to the south, and Orange and Los Angeles Counties to the north. Still, we have beaches, and young people are congregating without masks. In my area and wherever I've happened to go, people are wearing masks and following the rules.

Just saying.......... Jun 28, 2020

"One gives one's "regards to Broadway" or "give my regards to your mother," or even "Regards and salutations.". Singular "regard" or "regarding" refers to a subject or action, not a greeting. Saying "in regards to" is wrong because it's similar to saying "in hello to" when a person really means "regarding."

My favorite restaurant, the Black River Cafe, in Oberlin, Ohio, which I have frequented for many years, might be closed permanently, first because it was forced to during the pandemic, and then because the owner, who was also serving as the cook of late because he had to lay off almost all his employees, dropped a hot tub on his leg, which required immediate surgery. No one has been able to go inside of our beautiful public libraries here in Lorain County since the end of March, and Oberlin College Library is closed. It is unclear when any of them will re-open. Only the library at Lorain County Community College has re-opened, but for just 3 days a week, and for limited hours on those days, because of the pandemic. I can't get the books I need or want to read through the Ohio university libraries system, nor can I get the books that my soon-to-be 96-year old mother, who is now a shut-in more than ever because of the Covid virus, wants to read. I can't work at Starbucks either, because they won't allow patrons to use the restroom right now. These are all places I used to go to so I could do my translation work and escape all the things that distract me from that at home. The special friends I have developed over the years at these places have either retired because it was about time for them to anyway, or may have had to go elsewhere to get enough work so they can pay the rent and put food on the table. This pandemic is really cramping my work- and lifestyle. like it has for so many others. I don't find much pleasure in that, and I'm getting really fed up with it. Many are now saying that several states may have to re-impose restrictions that most people were very glad and relieved to get rid of.

I have great sympathy for you and your fellow Americans who don't seem to have strong leadership at the top, to say the least. Like you, we have been locked down here since March, seeing only close family now and with no local facilities open. I fear the marches and crowding, against government advice, will see further spikes in the pandemic. I send very best wishes to your mother - we have been helping a 93 year-old neighbour too. No fun for her. Keep smiling!

There will be no "business as usual" until there is a vaccine against Covid-19 and we've all been vaccinated.

Tom, and what ephemeral/experimental vaccines might have to do with people’s health and non-MS biz? (selling nano-vax by Mr. Billy Fatal-Error and plasma by Mr. Sorrowed)

It takes at least some five years to develop a vax, weighting its benefits and adverse* effects. Not the best option for children, elderly, and weakened either. Or you are really going to kick the bucket by design, yep?

Only a person has the full responsibility for his or her life to decides what is good or bad == only cattle is vaccinated by force without asking and informing.

While I understand you wish to feel young and risky again, all appropriate measured should correlate with the problem and price, which is out of question now.

Shortly, I don’t allow others to risk my life and my biz.

Not only A&E/Medical services/clinical trials Jun 30, 2020

That’s ok Tom--you must had overworked a little under pressure, so you might confused the topic with “How far back to "Medical business as usual" are things where you live with regards to the pandemic?” It’s really pro-lific nowadays, you know)

As far as even the big officials are still not sure about “covid”, weather asymptomatic patients are contagious, or whether it’s airborne, where it came from, and so on, it would be insane to mindlessly (self?)quarantine globally use an experimental (not ready--at least within some five years) stuff for inoculation against something unknown, let alone if there’s (1) no need [too late]; (2) severe/unknown consequences; or (3) different strains; (4) new names; (5) snake oil/placebo; and on.

As far as the real biz is a fair exchange between different parties (people), it cannot run well in isolation. For what it's worth, this 'quarantine' does sanitize the BS unnecessary jobs too.

Take care

Almost never had a full lockdown Jun 30, 2020

In DR Congo only public sector, religious assemblies and education have been stopped since march 18. Everything else like supermarkets and public markets, local transportation(not national), etc have always been running. The only thing which has been done so far is wearing masks and practicing social distanciation measure apart from washing hands as much as possible in daily basis.
