feels unfinished - what happen "when it was time for my father to sword train" is left unsaid, so the full stop must be a typo - easy to miss, especially that this wrong full stop is followed by "I" that is always a capital.

I think perhaps you should get the meaning right in English first! For me, it just means the child followed his father everywhere, even when his father was going to his swordtraining sessions, because it then goes on to talk about how he enjoyed watching his father fight...
