Pia, unlike mechanized/technical translation, literary translation is a very low-paid job with too many requirements and collateral tasks, considering the languages/structures difference, audience, era, author, allusions/metaphors, facts, researches, and so on. With the same logic, it should take 200 hours. With an hourly rate of $35, one would make about $7000 gross, no?

Lynn, right you are--depending on the edit and preferences, it may take some 40 days (200+ hours), but number are still about the same. * If the translator is able to prove she offers not a mere translation but rather a turn-key solution as an L2 co/author, then sometimes it would be better to negotiate $8000+ once, sometimes $5000 + royalties is more lucrative, depending on the terms and the number of copies. * However, if they apply 'fuzzy match/volume/discount... Indeed, some publishers use 40,000 characters as a reference to pre/calculate the author's fee, which means 2.5 author's pages. Not sure about the USA today, yet the wordcount is but one of the tentative points in translation, especially if they offer a McDonald's freshman small fee under $25/hours as a rough guide. Take it easy for now only a few can understand the highly qualified specialist is no bottom-feeder; nor how working harder really correlates with earning more. Cheers ▲ Collapse
