Dear translators,

If this post has caught your attention, please read the information below and if you feel it applies to you, it would be awesome if you could spare 10-15 min to take the survey.

Concurrent translation (CT) is a mode of translating in which translators, revisers and other agents work collaboratively and simultaneously on a cloud-based platform with centralised resources (TM, glossaries, MT). Multiple translators can be assigned a portion of a text or they can take any available segments. As soon as segments are confirmed by translators, they can be revised by the editor, thus significantly decreasing delivery time compared with the traditional, TEP workflow. Although CT has been around as part of the architecture of cloud-based translation management systems for at least a decade, very little is known about the experiences of translators working on those platforms and the impact of such workflows on the translation process, product and the translators themselves.

Many translators have not been exposed to such practices, but for many this is something they engage in on a regular basis. It is vital that research is carried out to uncover the implications of these workflows for the participating individuals and to understand the scenarios and the conditions necessary for such workflows to be successfully implemented.

For this reason, researchers at the Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Surrey have launched a survey to get a better understanding of the experiences of translators working on translation platforms such as Smartcat, Smartling, SDL Trados GroupShare, XTM, Wordbee, MemoQ Cloud, Lingotek, Memsource, MateCAT, Motaword, Transifex or other similar platforms enabling concurrent translation workflows.

As researchers, we are not endorsing any workflows, processes or technologies. We are investigating them to understand their impact, ultimately to mitigate challenges and to improve those processes as much as possible for the benefits of human translators.

We would be most grateful for any responses to the survey and we are also looking for participants for a follow-up (paid) interview. If you have any questions, please direct them to the researchers (contact details on the front page of the survey).

Here is the link to the survey:

The results of the survey will widely circulated and will be posted to this forum. Please share the link with your colleagues and circulate via your own channels if you find this appropriate.

Thank you so much for your contributions,
Joanna Gough
