No, but... Aug 3, 2017

... there are a few people I really like and would happily have a beer with...

... and a couple I totally fancy the pants off...

... and a few I really can't stand...

Same as any community, I guess.

Yes Aug 3, 2017

Over the years I have made some internet friends on Proz, though we haven’t met yet…

Yes, good colleagues Aug 3, 2017

Both through this poll and the Danish powwows.

Plus the international Proz.com conferences......what's happening this year?

No, but... Aug 3, 2017

... there are people here who almost always make me laugh, which makes it worthwhile checking in from time to time ...

I particularly enjoy reading contributions from those peers who don't take themselves too seriously, while still leaving me in no doubt that they are top notch professionals and very decent people.

There are some translators whose input I enjoy reading or find useful and kind but that's about it. I did get to private messaging with a couple but they no longer seem to be around here.

I have found much more fruitful relationships in real life and on other message boards, especially through my volunteer work and another more leisure-focussed website.

I come here because I like to see how others manage translation and client issues, not to find friends.

Not really Aug 3, 2017

From overseas I found some nice people (that I do not talk to).
I mainly use this to gather information and for a small pastime, and do not mean to take up other people's time especially when they are total strangers.

I believe Japanese are difficult to please especially when he or she is translator than any people in other occupation so I do not feel like Powow-ing. You won't know those people very well unless we have rare chance to get to some deep conversation that will n

I believe Japanese are difficult to please especially when he or she is translator than any people in other occupation so I do not feel like Powow-ing. You won't know those people very well unless we have rare chance to get to some deep conversation that will never , at least very less likely to happen on job info site. I have some people's name familiar through forum posts but I do not intend to make friends with them.

Colleagues/friends Aug 3, 2017

When I joined proz, 3 or 4 friends/colleagues who I knew in person were already on it. I regard the rest as acquaintances, but have yet to actually meet any of them.

How do you define friends? Aug 3, 2017

I've met loads of fellow ProZ.com members and users at conferences, a training course and a powwow, and we've recommended each other to clients and chatted a bit from time to time. And I've exchanged emails with loads more, often getting way off the original "work" topic. Are they friends?

Most definitely Aug 3, 2017

I've organized/participated in powwows and conferences in multiple countries and cities, so our relationships have grown past the online stage. I would say I've made excellent friends through ProZ.

Friends, colleagues, acquaintances... Aug 3, 2017

Seriously, I coincide with many in here about the nature and/or definition of “friend.” In some cultures, a friend in a profession only remains a friend for professional purposes. In other cultures (Latin American, for instance), a friend is a friend you share your work ideas, your family life news, comments about personal vacations, hobbies and more. The lines get bl

In other cultures (Latin American, for instance), a friend is a friend you share your work ideas, your family life news, comments about personal vacations, hobbies and more. The lines get blurred because there is no need to put up emotional walls.

If you ask me, Ohioans pretty much compartmentalize their friendships. Unless they know you from family relations or from childhood, there's no chance to develop a meaningful friendship with them. I found two exceptions, though, and they are no translators but a retired couple in their 60s who love books, classical music and friendly banter.

Yes, two or three Aug 3, 2017

We've visited each other at home with family and are since then regularly in contact mostly via Skype. I consider them really friends.
