Source text - Portuguese Um dos primeiros pesquisadores que definiram o nicho foi Hutchinson1 que, em 1957, conceituou nicho como uma forma de descrever as atividades de qualquer espécie em qualquer dimensão (física, biótica e química) do meio ambiente. Como essas dimensões possuem diversos componentes, dizemos que o nicho é n dimensional. Mas, como todos sabem, nós podemos ver apenas três dimensões e assim esse conceito é abstrato. Mesmo assim podemos trabalhar matematicamente e estatisticamente e demonstrar os resultados com representações gráficas em três ou menos dimensões.
O nicho de cada espécie ocupa uma parte do volume n dimensional que representa o total de recursos e o espaço disponível para a comunidade da qual aquela espécie faz parte. Hutchinson ainda afirmou que podemos descrever os limites da atividade de cada espécie de uma comunidade ao longo de cada uma das dimensões de seu ambiente, consequentemente descrever as relações entre as espécies pois elas fazem parte do nicho de uma e da outra(s) espécie(s). E isso, segundo Ricklefs2, seria a melhor maneira de entendermos os padrões observados nas estruturas das comunidades.
Um outro conceito para nicho, citado por Pinto-Coelho, seria que a estrutura da comunidade reflete as adaptações das espécies, que são resultados de processos seletivos coordenados por espécies coexistentes, o conceito de nicho abrange todas essas relações, pois o nicho ecológico de uma espécie deve mostrar o relacionamento do indivíduo com todos os aspectos do habitat.
Uma forma mais simples de se entender esses conceitos é relacionar os requisitos físicos e químicos do organismo como sendo seu endereço no meio e as relações desse organismo com outros como sendo sua profissão na comunidade.
Translation - English One of the first researchers to define the niche was Hutchinson who, in 1957, classified the niche as a way of describing the activities of any species in any dimension (physical, biotic and chemical) of the environment. As these dimensions have different components, we say that the niche is n dimensional. However, as everybody knows, we can only see three dimensions so this concept is abstract. Nonetheless, we can work mathematically and statistically and we can show the results with graphic representations in three or less dimensions.
The niche of each species occupies a part of the n dimensional volume that represents the total amount of resources and the available space for the community to which that species belongs. Hutchinson also stated that we can describe the activity limits of each species belonging to a community along each and every dimension in its environment, consequently describing the relationship among the species, for they belong to the niche of one and (the) other species. According to Ricklefs, this would be the best way to understand the standards observed in the structures of the communities.
Another concept of niche, mentioned by Pinto-Coelho, would be that the structure of the community reflects the species’ adaptations, which are a result of the selection processes coordinated by co-existing species; the concept of niche reaches all these relationships, because the ecological niche of a species must show the relationship between the subject and all the aspects of the habitat.
A simpler way to understand these concepts is relating the physico-chemical requirements of the organism as its address in the habitat and the relationships between this and other organisms as its profession in the community.
